What happened to all the online chat rooms?

Yahoo used to be the best place for chat rooms, but they have been invaded by those spam bots, which Yahoo cannot seem to stop. While Yahoo is not the only provider of online chat rooms, it seems that all other major sites, portals, and search engines have either closed their online chat rooms, or have been invaded by spam bots. What is causing the death of online chat rooms and is there any hope that they will return?
